Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle WA, 30 April 2025
“There is so much passion from women’s and girls’ hockey organizations in Seattle, and our players thrived on that energy during their Takeover Tour visit. Women’s teams from Seattle and Vancouver played against each other as early as 1921, and, given the proximity of our two newest cities – Vancouver is barely 140 miles away – I cannot wait for the first game in what I’m sure will be one of our fiercest rivalries,” noted PWHL Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Jayna Hefford.
Hefford’s comment was amplified by Amy Scheer, PWHL Executive Vice President of Business Operations, “The opportunity to start a new chapter of women’s hockey in the Pacific Northwest, combined with calling the world-class Climate Pledge Arena home has so much meaning for our league. The Kraken already have been unbelievably supportive, and it’s a joy to have PWHL Seattle join the WNBA’s Storm and the NWSL’s Reign, who are skyscrapers in the city’s towering sports landscape.’
Following two weeks after the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s announcement of Vancouver as the seventh team to join the League’s Original Six, today the PWHL announced the eighth in Seattle.
The new Seattle team will play its home games at Climate Pledge Arena, home to the NHL Kraken and the WNBA Storm – making CPA the first team to have two professional women’s teams as anchor tenants.
The new team will join the New York Sirens and Minnesota Frost as the PWHL teams to play in the same venues as their NHL counterparts.
The new team will share practice facilities as well, moving into Kraken Community Iceplex..
The team will feature Emerald Green and Cream as their primary colours – time will tell how the palette works within the league, as the Boston Fleet use a similar green and Victoire de Montréal cream accents.
Details will be forthcoming regarding both an Expansion Draft to populate both the Vancouver and Seattle teams, likely before the entry draft scheduled for 24 June.
